Welcome to Ceva Derma Day

We just have to do this again! In 2017 we arranged the first Ceva Derma Day. A journey to the Great Skin Barrier Reef with Prof. Aline Rodrigues Hoffmann, bringing new knowledge about the microbiome and the Cutaneous Ecosystem.

Diving deep into the mysteries of CAD

This year we are diving deep into the mysteries of Canine Atopic Dermatitis (CAD), together with Dr. Tim Nuttall as the key speaker of the day.

CAD is common, lifelong and often difficult to manage. Fortunately better research and knowledge about the underlying causes has led to new approaches and treatment options. It is a challenge to stay updated. Tim will introduce best praxis and guide us through the latest discoveries within this field.

Join us as we depart on this year's explorations and get the latest update from leading experts and your fellow Nordic specialists.

Diving deep into the mystery of CAD

Canine atopic dermatitis is very similar to eczema in humans. It is a complex condition that involves a poor skin barrier, abnormal skin inflammation, allergies to environmental and/or food allergens, and a dysbiosis of the cutaneous microbiome.

Atopic dermatitis is a lifelong disease that requires ongoing management. Regular proactive therapy to maintain remission is required to avoid flares and the march towards chronic inflammation. Chronic end stage disease is much harder to control and the changes may be irreversible.

Multimodal therapy to address the different triggers in each dog is more successful that relying on single agents. There is now a wide variety of different treatment options for canine atopic dermatitis. However, treatment is highly individual as dogs vary in their presentation, triggers, stage of disease, tolerance and efficacy. This lecture will discuss the indications, advantages and disadvantages of different therapeutic options that must be considered when planning treatment.

Cytology in practice (workshop track 1)

Cytology techniques are relatively simple, minimally invasive and cost-effective. It can be very helpful in achieving a diagnosis or guiding the next steps in an investigation. Cytology is particularly important in antimicrobial stewardship, where it offers a rapid, patient-side confirmation of bacterial infection. In many cases, moreover, cytology can give a good indication of the bacteria involved in the infection. This facilitates rational antibiotic choices.

This quiz will be a light-hearted way to explore the cytology of infectious, inflammatory, neoplastic and other skin lesions. Along the way, we’ll learn about different techniques and using an algorithmic approach to diagnosis.

Dr. Tim Nuttall

Tim has over 20 years of experience in research, clinical trials and managing CAD. He is a member of the international Committee in Allergic Diseases in Animals (ICADA), and has worked on their CAD position papers and treatment guidelines.

Benefits of Immunotherapy

Atopical dermatitis is a common cause of long-term or reoccuring itching in dogs. Allergen specific immunotherapy is the only treatment that really affects the development of the disease and as such it should be considered as a possibility for many atopics.

Allergen specific immunotherapy is a well tested treatment method with more than 100 years of clinical experience. But how does it exactly work? In this session we will discuss the mode of action, different types of immunotherapy, selection of allergen and so much more! Join Susanne in this inspiring talk - a mix of the theory behind and the clinical handcraft - providing you with answers on how your atopical dog-patients benefits of immunotherapy!

Responsible Treatment In Everyday Cases

Anti-microbial resistance is a growing problem and as veterinarians, we carry a responsibility in lowering such risk. Canine pyodermas are a frequent encounter in the clinic, including bacterial (especially staphylococcus spp.) infections. But how do we determine the choice of systemic antibiotics versus topical antiseptics for pyodermas and how do we make sure this is in line with owner compliance? This workshop will focus on everyday cases where we face the need to make choices for sensible antimicrobial treatments.

Atopic Challenges (workshop track 1)

Atopic dermatitis in the dog is a common debilitating disease complex, which often demands a strong need to control itch and relieve our patients from the discomfort of a pruritic skin. Although we are able to manage many of our atopic patients well, we have all met cases, where the itch has been challenging to keep under control or multiple underlying diseases have complicated the treatment outcome. This advanced workshop will address of some of the more challenging cases of canine atopic dermatitis, and suggestions on how to proceed to achieve the best outcome possible for these cases.

Mette Schjærff

Mette Schjærff is a DVM and small animal dermatologist working as an Assistant Professor and chief responsible for Dermatology Service at the University Hospital for Companion Animals, Copenhagen, Denmark (UCPH). The heart of compliance

When helping patients with dermatological issues it is essential that the owner follows our guidelines for the treatment to succeed. This is the heart of compliance. In this workshop Anna-Lena shares both her long experience as well as her enthusiasm for interaction with pet owners.

What can we (as nurses/technicians) do to promote better compliance - and why should we? Which tools do we have at our disposal? Are there new digital tools that can be used? We will discuss these questions and more together in this interactive session.

Anna-Lena Westman

Anna-Lena has more than 20 years of experience as a certified veterinary nurse. For 17 of these years she has worked at Blå Stjärnans Djursjukhus in Gothenburg where she is part of a dermatology team with two veterinarians and three certified nurses.
